Le dothraki a été créé par le linguiste David J. Peterson pour la série Game of Thrones de HBO, à partir de fragments présents dans les romans de George R.R. Martin. La langue compte plus de 3 000 mots et présente un ordre des mots sujet-verbe-objet, aucune forme écrite au sein de la fiction et un vocabulaire fortement axé sur les chevaux, la guerre et la vie nomade. Peterson a conçu le dothraki pour qu'il sonne rude tout en restant naturel, avec des influences du turc, du russe, de l'estonien et du swahili.
